Converting Diesel Trucks to Electric.

            The electrification of heavy transport is not limited to the manufacture of new electric trucks. A growing number of companies are opting to convert existing diesel vehicles to extend their lifespan and reduce emissions, without the need for a large investment in a completely new fleet. Australia has recently become the site of one of the largest projects in this field. 

            Janus Electric has announced an agreement with a logistics company to convert 67 diesel trucks into electric vehicles equipped with a swappable battery system. This operation represents one of the largest contracts secured to date by the Australian company and will accelerate the decarbonization of long-haul freight transport.

67 Diesel Trucks to be Converted to Electric.

            The project involves converting 67 tractor units already in service using a kit developed by Janus Electric. Instead of acquiring entirely new vehicles, the company will replace the diesel engine and the rest of the mechanical components with a fully electric propulsion system.

            The main advantage of this solution lies in the use of swappable batteries. When the vehicle needs recharging, the battery pack can be automatically replaced with a fully charged one in a short amount of time, thus avoiding the long waits associated with conventional charging. 

            This system has been specifically designed for logistics operators with repetitive routes and fixed distribution centers, where it is more efficient to install battery swapping stations and keep the modules fully charged continuously. According to Janus Electric, this technology also reduces vehicle downtime and allows for the continued use of trucks that still have many years of structural life remaining.

A real alternative to buying a new electric truck.

            The contract signed with Centurion also includes the deployment of the necessary infrastructure for operating this technology, as well as 77 battery packs. The company will install several automatic battery swapping stations, which will serve the new electrified fleet and facilitate continuous operations throughout the workday. Janus Electric, in a press release, confirmed the successful conversion of 25 diesel trucks to 100% electric power in its home region of Australia. The company reports having performed over 3,500 battery swaps, equivalent to nearly 1,130,000 kWh over 600,000 km. 

            This initiative demonstrates that the transition to zero-emission heavy goods vehicles is not limited to the purchase of entirely new vehicles. Converting existing trucks can significantly reduce initial investment and accelerate the electrification of large fleets, especially in sectors where vehicles travel hundreds of kilometers daily.

          Janus Electric maintains that this strategy helps reduce the environmental impact associated with manufacturing new trucks, as it reuses much of the original structure and components of each vehicle. While renowned manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, MAN, Scania, and Renault continue to expand their ranges of factory-electric trucks, other companies are exploring alternative solutions, such as converting existing vehicles or automatic battery swapping. 

            The agreement to electrify 67 diesel trucks confirms that these technologies are beginning to gain traction and could become an increasingly attractive option for accelerating the decarbonization of freight transport without waiting for a complete fleet renewal.
