Ljubljanski Potniški Promet acquires 35 electric buses, including some hydrogen-powered models

The investment—the total value of which has not been disclosed—for these 35 new vehicles represents the largest fleet modernization project in the history of Ljubljanski Potniški Promet (LPP), the public transport operator for Ljubljana. Currently, Ljubljanski Potniški Promet is primarily introducing battery-electric eCitaro models on urban routes that feature predictable schedules and regular opportunities for recharging. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz eCitaro G Fuel Cell buses are being added to the fleet for routes that demand greater range and operational flexibility.

The battery-electric Mercedes-Benz eCitaro, in its standard (non-articulated) bus configuration, has a theoretical energy storage capacity of up to 666 kWh. In contrast, the fuel-cell-powered eCitaro utilizes a smaller battery paired with a fuel cell to extend the vehicle's range. For the articulated version, the bus is equipped with a battery capacity of up to 392 kWh, supplemented by a 60 kW fuel cell. Specific details regarding the exact configurations ordered by Ljubljanski Potniški Promet have not been released; therefore, it is not possible to determine the precise operating ranges.

Nevertheless, it is clear that, alongside the fleet renewal, Ljubljanski Potniški Promet has developed the necessary charging and hydrogen-refueling infrastructure, while also refining operational processes to accommodate these new propulsion technologies. This project supports Ljubljana’s participation in the European "100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities" initiative, which aims to assist cities in their transition toward climate neutrality.

"Over the past year, we have built a fleet with zero local CO2 emissions, based on both battery-electric and hydrogen technologies." "Taken together, these measures lay the foundation for a reliable public transport system that is well-equipped to face the challenges of the future," stated Dr. Rok Vihar, Managing Director of Ljubljanski Potniški Promet.

"The transition toward mobility that generates no local carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions is a topic that now extends well beyond the vehicles themselves. It is essential to consider the interplay between vehicle technology, infrastructure, and operational experience. Ljubljanski Potniški Promet provides an impressive demonstration of how these elements can be successfully combined to create an efficient, future-ready public transport system," added Rasto Oderlap, Managing Director of Autocommerce, the general distributor for Mercedes-Benz buses in Slovenia.
