Bali’s Public Transport System Introduces Electric Buses

The eleven electric buses supplied by Hyundai for public transport in Bali are part of the Official Development Assistance (ODA) project, "Bali Sustainable Transport System." The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), in collaboration with South Korea’s Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment (MCEE) and the Government of Indonesia, is managing the project.

Following a tender process initiated by the GGGI last October, Hyundai was selected as the successful bidder. The company delivered the eleven electric buses during the project’s launch ceremony on October 22. The entire fleet consists of the "County EV" model—an eight-meter, medium-sized electric vehicle. As per the agreement, a local monitoring center will be established, primarily tasked with overseeing vehicle quality and on-road performance during the initial implementation phase.

Hyundai collaborated with the Indonesian bus body manufacturer L Anggada to produce the eleven electric County buses supplied for Bali’s public transport network. The model is available in various configurations; the version used in Bali features 20 seats, a 150 kW motor, and a 128 kWh battery, offering a range of over 200 kilometers. According to Hyundai, the County EV—in this specific configuration—delivers more than 30% better acceleration in the 50 to 80 km/h speed range compared to diesel-powered models.

This latest deployment follows the delivery, in November 2024, of another batch of 11 electric County buses for public transport in Surabaya—Indonesia’s second-largest city, located in the province of East Java. Hyundai seeks to consolidate its position in the Indonesian electric bus market and plans to expand its presence in the cities of Surabaya, Bali, and Jakarta.

Referring to the company’s new fleet of electric buses already in operation in Bali, a Hyundai representative stated: "It is highly significant to contribute to the transition toward environmentally friendly transport in Bali—a world-renowned tourist destination—by supplying electric buses. With the goal of optimizing our commercial network, we are currently undergoing a strategic expansion into high-potential markets. This initiative builds upon the experience gained in Indonesia, where we have successfully established a significant presence in the electric commercial vehicle sector."
