  • Introduction.

The class develops what cleans the diesel particulate filter best and prevents it from breaking down: chemical additives that can be added to the fuel, or driving on the highway at high revs to regenerate it.

  • How to clean the particulate filter.

Cleaning the particulate filter of a diesel car is very important for the performance of the vehicle and to prevent breakdowns in the short and medium term. But what is more effective, using chemical additives or driving on the highway at high revs to regenerate it?.

The diesel particulate filter is an essential component of modern diesel vehicles. Its function is to filter soot particles from exhaust gases, significantly reducing particulate pollution. But how exactly does it work?.

It consists of a porous ceramic structure that traps soot particles. These are burned at high temperatures in a process known as regeneration. This process produces carbon dioxide and water vapor, and a small amount of residue remains in the form of ash in the filter.

  • Additives: Chemical aids or risks?.

Despite their function, particulate filters have also gained notoriety for the breakdowns they can cause in many cars. This raises the question: how should you drive and how often to ensure they remain clean and in good working order, thereby preventing potentially costly breakdowns?.

Chemical additives mixed with fuel are designed precisely to facilitate the regeneration of the particulate filter. They reduce the ignition temperature of soot, so it can burn at lower temperatures. However, experts are also skeptical about their use.

According to ADAC, Europe's largest automobile club, while additives may provide short-term relief, in the long run they can increase the ash load in the filter. This can shorten its service life and lead to costly repairs. In addition, many manufacturers do not accept liability for damage caused by the use of these additives.

  • Regeneration is the natural method that occurs while driving.

In fact, the particulate filter regenerates itself automatically when driving at full load for extended periods, for example, on highways and expressways. This raises the temperature of the exhaust gases to over 600 degrees Celsius, which burns off the soot in the filter.

This method is especially effective if done regularly, which is why experts have always recommended it to diesel vehicle owners. However, it is important to note that the engine must be fully warmed up before driving to avoid damage. You should also plan for a period of low load after driving at high revs to allow the engine to cool down.

  • Comparison: Additives versus regeneration.

Both methods have advantages and disadvantages. Additives are easy to use and do not require special driving conditions. However, as we have seen, they can increase ash accumulation and are not suitable for all vehicles.

Regeneration, on the other hand, is a natural method that does not involve additional costs. However, it requires a longer trip under specific conditions and time, which is not always practical.

  • When is professional cleaning necessary?.

If the particulate filter becomes clogged despite regular maintenance, professional cleaning is usually the only solution. This involves removing it and cleaning it mechanically or thermally. This method is significantly cheaper than replacing the filter and restores its full functionality. However, it should only be carried out by professionals to avoid damage.

  • Thank you for your time.

The class has developed what cleans the diesel particulate filter best and prevents it from breaking down: chemical additives that can be added to the fuel, or driving on the highway at high revs to regenerate it, see you soon.
