Amazon acquires 50 new electric trucks from Mercedes for Europe
Amazon continues to electrify the heavy-duty transport used to move its goods across Europe. Mercedes-Benz Trucks has begun delivering over 50 eActros 600 units, which will be operated by various transport companies partnering with Amazon in Germany. The first trucks are already in service on logistics routes within the country, with the remainder being phased in over the coming months.
This operation is part of a larger-scale agreement. Amazon announced the acquisition of more than 200 Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 electric trucks—the company's largest order of electric trucks to date—in early 2025. While approximately 140 of these vehicles were initially allocated to the UK and Germany, Mercedes has now confirmed that over 50 of them will operate specifically within the German market.
Over 600 kWh battery capacity and up to 560 km range.
The Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 features three battery packs equipped with LFP technology, offering a combined installed capacity of over 600 kWh, with approximately 621 kWh of usable energy. Mercedes cites an approximate range of 500 kilometers at a gross combination weight of 40 tonnes. However, Amazon's initial operational experience has shown that this figure can be exceeded on certain routes.
Recently, one of the new trucks completed a journey of approximately 560 kilometers between Amazon logistics centers in Germany without requiring an intermediate charge. The company noted that these routes can exceed 500 kilometers per day and that the vehicles will primarily be charged during drivers' mandatory breaks and overnight. Under optimal conditions, Mercedes estimates that the eActros 600 can cover more than 1,000 kilometers daily by utilizing intermediate charging stops.
The truck is equipped with an electric axle developed specifically by Mercedes-Benz Trucks, featuring a continuous output of 400 kW (equivalent to approximately 544 hp) and peak outputs of up to 600 kW (approximately 816 hp). Its LFP batteries are designed to withstand over 1.2 million kilometers of use over a ten-year period while retaining more than 80% of their original capacity by the end of that time.
Amazon is preparing its own truck charging network.
It is important to note that operating an electric fleet of this magnitude requires adequate infrastructure. Amazon is installing 360 kW chargers at its European facilities, capable of boosting the eActros 600’s battery charge from approximately 20% to 80% in less than 70 minutes. This technology allows for the optimization of driver breaks, enabling them to recover a significant portion of the necessary energy before resuming their journey.
The eActros 600 is ready for the future Megawatt Charging System (MCS), with which Mercedes aims to achieve power outputs exceeding 1,000 kW. Under optimal conditions, a charge from 20% to 80% could be completed in approximately 30 minutes, significantly narrowing one of the main operational gaps compared to long-haul diesel trucks.
According to Amazon's calculations, the European order for over 200 eActros 600 trucks will enable the company to cover more than 100 million electric kilometers annually and avoid approximately 10,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year. For Mercedes-Benz Trucks, this agreement serves as a significant demonstration of its electric trucks' capability to cover long distances—a sector historically dominated by diesel vehicles.
