Slide 1. Introduction.

The class develops the possible symptoms of a dirty diesel filter, the consequences, and the implications for fleet management.

Slide 2. Diesel filter.

When the diesel filter is dirty, the engine begins to show clear signs of loss of performance. The accumulation of impurities and sediments from diesel can cause combustion problems, power delivery failures, and even more expensive breakdowns if not resolved in time.

  • What is the function of the diesel filter?.

Diesel fuel is not as clean as gasoline. For this reason, diesel vehicles have a specific filter that is responsible for:

  1. Retaining particles and impurities that could damage the injectors.
  2. Separating the water contained in the diesel fuel, which can cause corrosion and affect the combustion process.

Keeping the filter in good condition is key to maintaining engine performance, fuel efficiency, and extending the life of the injection system.

  • Symptoms of a dirty diesel filter.

Below are the most common symptoms that indicate that the filter needs to be replaced or serviced.

  1. Jerking when accelerating.

One of the first symptoms is irregular acceleration. The car responds slowly or jerks slightly, especially when you press the accelerator harder. This is due to a lack of fuel flow caused by a clogged filter.

  1. Unstable idling.

When the engine is idling, it may run unsteadily, with a tendency to stall or lose revs. Unstable idling occurs because not enough diesel fuel is reaching the engine to maintain minimum operation.

  1. Lack of power when overtaking.

If, when trying to overtake, you notice that the car is not responding as it should or is taking longer to pick up speed, the filter may be restricting the fuel flow.

  • How often should the diesel filter be changed?.

The frequency with which the diesel filter should be replaced depends on the type of vehicle, how it is used, and the quality of the fuel, as a general rule:

  1. It is recommended to replace it every 40,000 kilometers.
  2. In very demanding vehicles or those using fuel of dubious quality, it may be advisable to do so more frequently.

Another practical guideline is to change it every two oil changes, especially in older vehicles.

  • How much does it cost to change the filter?.

The price of a diesel filter varies depending on the make and model of the car, as a guide:

  1. Cost of the replacement: between $15 and $100.
  2. If labor is included at a repair shop, the final price can range from $50 to $150, depending on how difficult it is to access the filter.
  • Implications for fleet management.

Although not visible to the naked eye, the diesel filter is an essential part of the operation of diesel vehicles. A dirty filter not only reduces engine performance, but can also cause:

  1. Damage to the injectors.
  2. Increased fuel consumption.
  3. Increased pollutant emissions.
  4. Serious breakdowns if water or particles enter the combustion system.

To avoid these problems, the diesel filter must be changed according to the manufacturer's instructions and within the recommended time frame.

Keeping the diesel filter in good condition not only prevents breakdowns, but also improves vehicle performance and extends its useful life. If you notice any of the above symptoms, don't wait for the problem to get worse. We recommend changing the diesel filter; a timely change is an investment in safety and efficiency.

The main consequence for fleet management is the cost of possible breakdowns caused by the diesel filter and the downtime during which the vehicle is unavailable for service.

The quality of diesel fuel varies from country to country. If we are in a country where the quality of diesel fuel is low, we will have to change the diesel filter more frequently than recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.

It is recommended to use original or premium brand spare parts that guarantee high performance.

There are brands of spare parts that specialize in all types of engine, air, diesel, etc. filters.
