Amazon Has Over 30,000 Rivian Electric Delivery Vans
Rivian remains the primary supplier of electric delivery vans for Amazon, although the retailer is implementing a broader electrification strategy. Last summer, Amazon also ordered approximately 5,000 electric vans from Mercedes-Benz Vans. The all-electric eVito and eSprinter models are being made available to delivery partners in five countries, with more than half of the units allocated to Germany.
However, this report focuses on Rivian’s electric delivery van (EDV). In addition to approximately 600 units operating in Germany, Amazon and its partners deploy the model almost exclusively in the United States. According to the latest annual figures provided by Rivian, Amazon currently operates more than 30,000 custom electric delivery vehicles (EDVs) distributing packages across numerous U.S. cities.

In addition to existing front-wheel-drive versions with a standard battery, Rivian is developing new variants featuring a larger battery and all-wheel drive, as outlined in its shareholder letter. The larger battery pack is expected to increase range by approximately 30%, while the additional drive unit should optimize traction in challenging conditions, such as mud and snow. Rivian plans to roll out these improvements to expand route coverage within Amazon’s logistics network.
According to Rivian, these electric commercial vehicles were designed specifically for Amazon’s delivery process. Features such as an automatic bulkhead door—which opens as soon as the driver arrives at their destination—help improve efficiency.

Furthermore, it has been confirmed that the total cost of ownership (TCO) is more affordable compared to that of a combustion-engine van. Amazon remains a key customer for Rivian. Notably, financial data from the fourth quarter of 2025 highlights the significant volume of EDV deliveries to Amazon.
Amazon and Rivian maintain a long-standing partnership, established in 2019, under which Rivian committed to manufacturing 100,000 electric vans for Amazon, with delivery scheduled before 2030. To support this goal, Amazon has positioned itself as Rivian's primary investor. However, it is important to note that Volkswagen, as a new partner to Rivian, could surpass Amazon in the future.
