Amazon to Deploy 3,000 Electric Trucks in India

Tata Motors, India’s largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles, will supply Amazon with a total of 3,000 electric trucks. India’s Minister of Heavy Industries and Steel, H.D. Kumaraswamy, officially inaugurated the fleet, highlighting the significance of this initiative in promoting the adoption of electric trucks across the country.

Under the agreement, Amazon’s transport partners will acquire the 3,000 electric trucks from Tata Motors and operate them on Amazon’s behalf. This "asset-light" strategy is intended to help the company electrify its transport fleet without requiring a major capital investment, while also limiting its risk exposure.

According to Amazon, the new electric trucks manufactured by Tata Motors will be put into service in Delhi during this year’s festive season—a period typically marked by a surge in shipment volumes for e-commerce companies and retailers. Amazon is expanding its use of electric vehicles beyond last-mile delivery, planning to utilize Tata Motors’ light and medium-duty electric trucks to transport shipments between its facilities.

In the next phase, Amazon will deploy a fleet of electric trucks along National Highway 48, which stretches from the national capital, Delhi, toward the south, ending in Chennai (Tamil Nadu). Spanning approximately 2,800 kilometers, this is India’s longest freight corridor; it traverses seven states and connects six of the country’s most significant e-commerce hubs.

The company is currently rolling out charging infrastructure in collaboration with Yahhvi, a Delhi-based firm that specializes in electric vehicle charging solutions for commercial vehicles. This initiative is designed to support the next phase of the deployment. The first batch supplied by Tata Motors to Amazon consists exclusively of light electric trucks—specifically, the Ultra E.7 model.

This model has a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 7.5 tonnes, features a 14-foot cargo bed, and offers a payload capacity of 3.1 tonnes when equipped with a cargo container. The vehicle is powered by a 240 kW permanent-magnet synchronous motor and a 96 kWh LFP battery pack, providing a range of up to 130 kilometers.

Amazon currently operates a fleet of over 15,000 electric vehicles across more than 500 cities in India. Regarding the recent initiative to deploy 3,000 electric trucks, Abhinav Singh, Vice President of Operations for Amazon in the Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Africa, and Turkey region, stated: "We are setting an ambitious goal to increase our use of electric trucks, thereby addressing one of the most complex challenges in the decarbonization of transport." He added, "Our collaboration with Tata Motors marks a significant milestone in achieving this objective."
